Monthly Dance Performance Series

Canvas - The Kuteera Series

Canvas – The Kuteera Series is a monthly dance performance initiative by Abstratics, designed to celebrate movement in all its forms — from the deeply rooted traditions of classical dance to the boundless explorations of contemporary and experimental work.

Held on the last Sunday of every month, Canvas is an evolving space where dancers, choreographers, and movement artists gather to share, explore, and converse through performance.

Here, tradition and experimentation are not opposites—they coexist, inform, and enrich one another. A Bharatanatyam solo, a contemporary improvisation, and a cross-disciplinary collaboration may all share the same evening, each offering a distinct way of seeing and feeling movement.

At its heart, Canvas is about expression, process, and dialogue—a space where artists bring their stories to life and audiences experience art as a living conversation.

A Community of Artists and Audiences

The Kuteera Series was conceived as a community space—a sanctuary for artistic exchange, growth, and reflection. Abstratics believes that art thrives when shared, and that the boundary between artist and audience should be porous. Each performance invites participation, conversation, and mutual understanding.

After every show, the space opens into dialogue—an opportunity for artists and audiences to reflect, discuss, and respond together.

This interactive format transforms each edition into an experience of collective discovery—where both performer and viewer are equally engaged in the process of understanding movement, emotion, and meaning. Through this community-driven approach, Canvas aims to build long-term relationships between artists and audiences, fostering empathy, curiosity, and collaboration.

Celebrating Diversity in Dance and Movement

Canvas – The Kuteera Series welcomes artists from all dance backgrounds—classical, contemporary, folk, urban, and experimental. Whether your roots lie in Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, or your work emerges from modern, improvisational, or interdisciplinary practices, Canvas invites you to bring your body, story, and imagination to the space. Every performance is a dialogue between heritage and innovation, between form and freedom. Traditional practices find new contexts; experimental works find grounding in cultural depth.

Empowering Emerging and Budding Artists

A core vision of the series is to support emerging voices and offer a nurturing platform for budding dancers and choreographers. Each month, three artists are invited to present their work—be it a refined traditional piece, an experimental exploration, or a work-in-progress that seeks feedback and conversation.

The Kuteera Series offers artists:

  1. A safe and inclusive performance space for sharing honest, evolving work.
  2. Opportunities for creative risk-taking and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  3. Direct engagement with a responsive, supportive audience.
  4. Access to a growing network of artists and mentors within the dance community.

For many, Canvas becomes a stepping stone—a space to test new ideas, refine practice, and build confidence before larger stages.

An Intimate, Immersive Experience

Set within the warm and welcoming Abstratics Studio, Canvas – The Kuteera Series is designed for a limited audience, ensuring intimacy and immediacy. Here, the experience is not distant or detached—the audience sits close, feeling every gesture, rhythm, and breath.

This proximity allows art to be felt deeply and personally, creating a space where dance becomes an act of shared presence.

The Kuteera (meaning ‘home’ or ‘sanctuary’) reflects the essence of this series—a place where artists and audiences gather not as strangers, but as a community sharing an evening of movement, thought, and emotion.

Vision and Philosophy

Through Canvas – The Kuteera Series, Abstratics seeks to:

  1. Encourage creative experimentation alongside respect for tradition.
  2. Build bridges between classical, contemporary, and interdisciplinary practices.
  3. Offer visibility and confidence to emerging and independent artists.
  4. Strengthen connections between performers and audiences through shared, immersive experiences.
  5. Foster dialogue and collaboration across different artistic languages and generations.
  6. Cultivate community, empathy, and appreciation for performance as a living, evolving art form.

Each edition becomes a chapter in a collective story—about heritage and change, individuality and togetherness, creativity and community.
